Ban Islam?

Read it today. Clogging up my newsfeed.  “Ban Islam”.   And though they know this demand will never, under any circumstances, be taken seriously – they mean what they’re saying.  A dangerous sentiment.  And it most always comes from folks who believe in limited government, “constitutionalism”, and…personal responsibility.

Folks! Do not let anger and fear cloud your reason! Use your heads! You’re arguing for collectivism. A collective punishment for crimes committed by individuals. Sounds eerily similar to the arguments in favor of gun control. Strike that, it’s not similar, it’s exactly the same argument! Adam Lanza and James Holmes killed people with guns, therefore we should restrict everyone’s right to own guns (or ban them outright). A minority of practicing Muslims kill people, therefore we should restrict everyone’s right to practice Islam…Nonsense. As nonsensical as anything the President you revile so much has ever said.

Over two million Muslims in the United States. Nearly two billion in the world. Milton Friedman used to scold young liberal detractors at his speaking engagements – “Have a sense of proportion!”. And that applies here…Conservatives, Christians, have a freaking sense of proportion! You’re more likely to drown than perish in a terrorist attack! Mourn the tragedy, demand justice, but get a grip on yourselves!

And you’d do well to understand that, in general, it isn’t a hatred of the western way of life that provokes these attacks (jury’s still out on Boston), it’s the Western governments meddling in the affairs of Islamic countries. That doesn’t justify these horrific attacks, but any solution requires an understanding of the underlying problem. The intelligence community you support with your tax dollars understands this. You should too.

“American direct intervention in the Muslim World has paradoxically elevated the stature of and support for radical Islamists, while diminishing support for the United States to single-digits in some Arab societies.”

“Muslims do not “hate our freedom,” but rather, they hate our policies. The overwhelming majority voice their objections to what they see as one-sided support in favor of Israel and against Palestinian rights, and the longstanding, even increasing support for what Muslims collectively see as tyrannies, most notably Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan, and the Gulf states.”

“Furthermore, in the eyes of Muslims, American occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq has not led to democracy there, but only more chaos and suffering. U.S. actions appear in contrast to be motivated by ulterior motives, and deliberately controlled in order to best serve American national interests at the expense of truly Muslim self-determination.”

“Therefore, the dramatic narrative since 9/11 has essentially borne out the entire radical Islamist bill of particulars. American actions and the flow of events have elevated the authority of the Jihadi insurgents and tended to ratify their legitimacy among Muslims. Fighting groups portray themselves as the true defenders of an Ummah (the entire Muslim community) invaded and under attack – to broad public support.” – Report of the Defense Science Board Task Force, 2004
